Metaphor #2

"I Hope You Dance"

By: Leann Womack

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder

You get your fill to eat

But always keep that hunger

May you never take one single breath for granted

God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

I hope you still feel small

When you stand by the ocean

Whenever one door closes,

I hope one more opens

Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance

Never settle for the path of least resistance

Living might mean taking chances

But they're worth taking

Lovin' might be a mistake

But it's worth making

Don't let some hell bent heart

Leave you bitter

When you come close to selling out
Reconsider

Give the heavens above

More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance I hope you dance

(Time is a real and constant motion always)

I hope you dance

(Rolling us along)

I hope you dance

(Tell me who)

I hope you dance

(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)

(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small When you stand by the ocean

Whenever one door closes,

I hope one more opens

Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

Dance

I hope you dance

I hope you dance

(Time is a real and constant motion always)

I hope you dance

(Rolling us along)

I hope you dance

(Tell me who)

(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)

I hope you dance

(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who) I hope you dance

(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)

(Where those years have gone)

Metaphor #1

"You Can Let Go Now Daddy..."

By: Crystal Shawanda

Wind blowin’ on my face
Sidewalk flyin’ beneath my bike
A five year-old’s first taste
Of what freedom’s really like
He was runnin’ right beside me
His hand holdin’ on the seat
I took a deep breath and hollered
As I headed for the street
You can let go now,
Daddy You can let go
Oh, I think I’m ready
To do this on my own
It’s still a little bit scary
But I want you to know
I’ll be ok now, Daddy
You can let go
I was standin’ at the altar
Between the two loves of my life
To one I’ve been a daughter
To one I soon would be a wife
When the preacher asked,
‘Who gives this woman?’
Daddy’s eyes filled up with tears
He kept holdin’ tightly to my arm
‘Till I whispered in his ear
You can let go now,
Daddy--
You can let go..
Oh, I think I’m ready
To do this on my own
It still feels a little bit scary
But I want you to know
I’ll be ok now, Daddy
You can let go
It was killin’ me to see
The strongest man I ever knew
Wastin’ away to nothin’
In that hospital room
'You know he’s only hangin’ on for you
’That’s what the night nurse said
My voice and heart were breakin’
As I crawled up in his bed, and said
You can let go now, Daddy
You can let go
Your little girl is ready
To do this on my own
It’s gonna be a little bit scary
But I want you to know
I’ll be ok now, Daddy
You can let go
You can let go...

This song is about a dad whos little girl grew up way to fast for him to except it. I can relate to this song alot because my dad is just like this one and it is really hard for him to start letting go and except reality that I am also growing up as well. In the verse "You can let go" where shes talking about her dad giving her up to her soon-to-be husband she has to tell him he can let go now as, letting go of her arm and her in general because she is about to be given away to another man who will take care of her for the rest of her life. Also, when the father become sick the nurse said "hes only hanging on to you you know" that states he is still holding on for her and to her and he doesn't want to let go even though he is suffering. She soon realizes she wants him in peace with no pain even if that means "letting him go" and die in peace.

"The River"

By: Garth Brooks

You know a dream is like a river

Ever changin' as it flows

And a dreamer's just a vessel

That must follow where it goes

Trying to learn from what's behind you

And never knowing what's in store

Makes each day a constant battle

Just to stay between the shores

And I will sail my vessel

'Til the river runs dry

Like a bird upon the wind

These waters are my sky

I'll never reach my destination

If I never try So I will sail my vessel

'Til the river runs dry

Too many times we stand aside

And let the waters slip away

'Til what we put off 'til tomorrow

It has now become today

So don't you sit upon the shoreline

And say you're satisfied

Choose to chance the rapids

And dare to dance that tide

And I will sail my vessel

'Til the river runs dry

Like a bird upon the wind

These waters are my sky

I'll never reach my destination If I never try

So I will sail my vessel

'Til the river runs dry

There's bound to be rough waters

And I know

I'll take some falls

With the good Lord as my captain

I can make it through them all

And I will sail my vessel

'Til the river runs dry

Like a bird upon the wind

These waters are my sky

I'll never reach my destination

If I never try So I will sail my vessel

'Til the river runs dry Lord, I will sail my vessel

'Til the river runs dry
Yea....

“The River” By Garth Brooks has an unbelievably large about of similes in this song. But overall this song is about not settling for being satisfied or taking the easy way out just to slip by but taking life and making it into the best it can be. Also, this story is stating life is better to go the harder way to get to destination or wherever you may be going or doing in life because it’s that much sweeter when you get there. A couple examples of similes out of this song are “You know a dream is like a river, Ever changin’ as it flows” meaning your dreams are like a river to the aspect where there always moving and changing rapidly. In another verse: “Like a bird upon the wind, These waters are my sky” this means he will soar through the troubles and tribulations to get to his destination but he’ll never reach there unless he tries.

Concrete Angel
by Martina McBride

She walks to school with a lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back;
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday,
She hides the bruises with the linen and lace; oh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask,
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask;
Bearing the burdon of a secret storm,
Sometimes she wishes she was never born;

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night,
The neighbors hear but they turn out the lights;
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate,
When morning comes it will be too late.

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

A statue stands in a shaded place,
An angel girl with an upturned face;
Her name is written on a polished rock,
A broken heart that the world forgot.

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Concrete Angel by Martina McBride shares a story where a young girl feels very alone and uncared for. She gets beaten at home and holding back the pain, she also she wished she were never born. Although her troubles and tribulations almost keep knocking her down, she tries with all her might to keep her head up “in a world that she can’t rise above but her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she’s loved”. An example of why I picked this song to analyze and also include a simile is because the quote “She stands as hard as a stone”. She soon realizes she obviously can’t stand as hard as stone and she begins to tumble down which would foreshadow her death.

Song Analysis

“I Wonder” By Kellie Pickler
Sometimes I think about you
Wonder if you're out there somewhere thinking bout me
And would you even recognize
The woman that your little girl has grown up to be
Cause I look in the mirror and all I see
Are your brown eyes lookin back at me
They're the only thing you ever gave to me at all
------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, I hear the weather's nice in California
There's sunny skies as far I can see
If you ever come back home to Carolina
I wonder what you'd say to me
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I think about how it aint fair
That you weren't there to braid my hair
Like mothers do
You weren't around to cheer me on
Help me dress for my high school prom
Like mothers do
Did you think I didn't need you here
To hold my hand
To dry my tears
Did you even miss me through the years at all
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, I hear the weather's nice in California
There's sunny skies as far I can see
If you ever come back home to Carolina
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wonder what you'd say to me
Forgiveness is such a simple word
But it's so hard to do when you've been hurt
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, I hear the weather's nice in California
And just in case you're wondering about me
For now on I won't be in Carolina
Your little girl is offYour little girl is off
Your little girl is off to Tennessee

Kellie Pickler was among the only few to experience real fame from the fifth season of the hit show, American Idol. Her set of pipes brought her to the peak of her career and was country music bound as she stayed true to her Carolina roots. On top of being gifted with the talent to sing,
Pickler is also a brilliant song writer. Her hit song “I Wonder” was written by her, and also addresses her feelings growing up without a mother figure. Like all great musical artists and song writers, Pickler shares with the listener that it was like not having a mother through her childhood days; “I think about how it ain’t fair that you weren’t there to braid my hair like mothers do. You weren’t around to cheer me on, help me dress for my high school prom like mothers do”. Kellie also shares her emotional distress when in the song she states “Did you think I didn’t need you here to hold my hand, to dry my tears? Did you even miss me through the years at all?” I Wonder is home to many poetic devices which emphasis her true meaning and emotions she’s trying to let out in this song. Pickler states, “I have nothing to go home for.” Although Kellie’s life has been short of perfection, she has worked for her dreams which turned into a reality. Growing up she said “I’ve seen my whole family struggle, with money, with relationships, with alcohol, and I thought there must be a better way. As you mature, you realize you don’t choose your parents. It’s not your fault what they do and you should not be ashamed.” Her lyrics speak for themselves.
Thus, Pickler has many different types of writing. She writes narratives about her life and stories about love. The song “I Wonder” is set up differently only for the simple fact that the song starts with the verse. It starts with the verse then chorus, verse chorus and then manages to fit in a bridge. This is also called BABA. Starting with a verse tends to capture the listeners and hold their attention to wanting to listen more to the lyrics and the actual story behind the just the music, “Sometimes I think about you. Wonder if you’re out there somewhere thinkin’ bout me. And would you even recognize, the woman that your little girl has turned out to be, Cuz I look in the mirror and all I see, Are your brown eyes looking back at me. They’re the only thing you ever gave to me at all.” The purpose of the bridge in this song is to extend it and give it a more personal touch to it, “Forgiveness. Such a simple word, but it’s so hard to do when you’ve been hurt.” All in all Pickler uses many devices to reveal her personal stories and emotions through singing and song writing. Her love of country music has landed her at the top of the country charts where her small town charm hasn’t been wasted. The beauty of her artistic abilities singing and song writing come from other artists such as “Shania Twain mixed with a little bit of Willie Nelson.” All in all, Pickler’s song “I Wonder,” contains numerous songwriting aptitudes with a lot of personal emotion sure to capture the hearts of many. With a lot of personal experience and the climbing up on the country charts she has climbed the obstacles to lead her to success and no one can stop her in her tracks.

Kenny Chesney

"Don't Blink"

I turned on the evening news
Saw an old man being interviewed
Turning a hundred and two today
Asked him what's the secret to life
He looked up from his old pipe
Laughed and said "All I can say is ."

Don't Blinkjust like that you're six years old and you take a nap and you
Wake up and you're twenty-five and your high school sweetheart becomes your wife
Don't blink just might miss your babies growin' like mine did
Turning into moms and dads; next thing you know your better half of fifty years is there in bed
And you're praying God takes you instead
Trust me friend, a hundred years goes faster than you think
So don't Blink

I was glued to my tv when it looked like he looked at me and said
"Best start putting first things first."
Cause when your hour glass runs out of sand
You can't flip it over and start again
Take every breath God gives you for what it's worth

Don't Blink
just like that you're six years old and you take a nap and you
Wake up and you're twenty-five and your high school sweetheart becomes your wife
Don't blink
just might miss your babies growin' like mine did
Turning into moms and dads next thing you know your better half of fifty years is there in bed And you're praying God takes you instead
Trust me friend, a hundred years goes faster than you think
So don't blink

So I've been tryin' to slow it down
I've been tryin' to take it in
In this here today, gone tomorrow world we're livin' in

Don't Blink
just like that you're six years old and you take a nap and ya'
Wake up and you're twenty-five and your high school sweetheart becomes your wife
Don't Blink just might miss your babies growin' like mine did
Turning into moms and dads; next thing you know your better half of fifty years is there in bed And you're praying God takes you instead
Trust me friend, a hundred years goes faster than you think
So Don't Blink

No, don't blink
life goes faster than you think
-----------------------------------
I'm sure everyone has heard this song at some point. Kenny Chesney really emphasizes on living every moment to it's fullest and never taking any of it for granted. At a certain point in life your going to look back and wonder where the time went and the memories you had and who you shared them with. This song title explains this song completely. the meaning "don't blink" means live your life, don't go through it with just ending one day of work and no play because your going to get older and not appreciate life how you should where ever you are. Live your life, and live it well.
