Song Analysis III

You Belong With Me” By Taylor Swift

You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset

She's going off about something that you said'

Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do

I'm in the room, it's a typical

Tuesday nightI'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like

And she'll never know your story like I do

But she wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts

She's Cheer Captain and I'm on the bleachers

Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find

That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

If you could see that I'm the one who understands you

Been here all along, so why can't you see?

You, you belong with me, you belong with me

Walking the streets with you and your worn-out jeans

I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be

Laughing on a park bench, thinking to myself

Hey, isn't this easy? And you've got a smile that could light up this whole town

I haven't seen it in a while since she brought you down

You say you're fine, I know you better than that

Hey, what ya doing with a girl like that?

She wears high heels, I wear sneakers

She's Cheer Captain and I'm on the bleachers

Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find

That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

If you could see that I'm the one who understands you

Been here all along, so why can't you see?

You belong with me

Standing by and waiting at your back door

All this time how could you not know?

Baby, you belong with me, you belong with me

Oh, I remember you driving to my house in the middle of the night

I'm the one who makes you laugh when you know you're 'bout to cry

And I know your favorite songs and you tell me 'bout your dreams

Think I know where you belong, think I know it's with me

Can't you see that I'm the one who understands you?

Been here all along, so why can't you see?

You belong with me

Standing by and waiting at your back door

All this time, how could you not know?

Baby, you belong with me, you belong with me

You belong with me

Have you ever thought just maybe

You belong with me?

You belong with me

Taylor Swift has exceeded many people’s expectations of how far a 16 year old can go in the Country Music world alone. Swift has carried the title as an American Country-pop singer-songwriter, and released her debut single “Tim McGraw”. Surprised, many music managers turned their heads when they heard this young girl’s album hit number 6 on the Billboard country charts. “New York Times describes Swift as “one of pop's finest songwriters, country’s foremost pragmatist and more in touch with her inner life than most adults.” Swift describes herself by her music, “Well my music is honest. I'm a singer/songwriter and I've written every song on my album. I like to write about relationships-love or getting out of it and stuff like that.” TS also states; “When people look back on my career, I'd love for them to look at what I've done and say wow, she wrote songs for herself but she also wrote that hit for someone else, and then someone else." I'd love for people to look back and say that I never took anything for granted and I appreciated everything that was ever given to me because everything can be taken away if I make one wrong move. I want people to look back and realize that I was really respectful of the music industry and my career - and that I sold millions and millions of albums.” Every girl no matter what age she was going through this has always been jealous of another girl who has the guy they want. It really is an inevitable situation that everyone has gone through one time or another. This song describes just that, “You’re on the phone with your girlfriend- She’s upset. She’s going off about something that you said; she doesn’t get your humor like I do”. The narrator is focusing on all the bad stuff the girlfriend pulls on the boyfriend and making him actually think about how she is opposite from him. She goes on to say “But she wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts, she’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers. Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find- that you’re looking for has been here the whole time”. The narrator feels as though her crush and her are so much alike and she gets him to the fullest, that they have so much more in common than him and his girlfriend that she states; “Oh, I remember you driving to my house in the middle of the night. I’m the one who makes you laugh when you know you’re about to cry. And I know your favorite songs and you tell me about your dreams. Think I know where you belong.. Think I know it’s with me”. This song relates to my theme/ genre because of many things. #1 being that every girl sometime in her life goes through a phase of wanting what someone else has and not being able to receive it. Although this is a awful and a bad trait to carry, one must pray that she soon “grows up” and learns that it is not okay to be jealous or to be wanting something you can’t have all the time because one should always be happy with what they have and learn that lesson. Swift uses a couple different songwriting aptitudes such as imagery, “Walkin’ the streets with you in your worn out jeans, I can’t help thinking this is how it ought to be. Laughing on the park bench thinkin’ to myself, Hey isn’t this easy?” Another device used in this song, also as a Poetic Term is conflict. In this song the conflict is between the story teller and the boy’s girlfriend. Last but not least, she used “Characterization” when she speaks about how the girlfriend makes her boyfriend feel which is bad and angry. In this song I think that Taylor Swift got her point across that she was the narrator and was one time put in a situation like this and wanted to share her story in her song.
